Diploma in Game Design and Development

The Diploma is designed to enable participants to excel in Game Design and Development hrough teaching the basics in designing, creating and publishing engaging games. This programme also provides a solid foundation in multimedia, software skills and project experience required in the Game industry. By using programming tools and teaching the latest software skills, participants will not only be able to create market-driven games, but also able to consider business elements in their game projects. This would give them a competitive edge over their peers.


           
          Main Objectives of the Course
 

This course will give participants a holistic approach to an enriching learning experience and assessments via coursework as well as paper examinations to become well-versed in the Game-focused industry through realistic project work, coursework and practical programming skills. Topics include Game Design, Visual and Audio effects, Animations, Game AI, Game Programming and Game Production.

This diploma will equip participants with the required game industry knowledge, as well as some of the most current and highly sought after IT skills in computing platforms. Graduates from this programme can look forward to exciting careers in the gaming and digital media industry.

Course Design and Content

This part–time Diploma in Game Design and Development consists of 6 modules and can be completed in 15 months. Kindly find out more from ACPE on the next available entry date.

Core Modules

DM-110 Game Design

This module equips you with the fundamentals of designing and creating games through various computing PC platforms.You will explore different techniques of creating compelling content in the following areas - narration (storytelling), identity (characters), experience (game play), world (levels) and atmosphere (visual effects and audio).

DM-111 Game Visual & Audio effects

This module introduces the essential techniques to create quality commercial games. It will touch on the techniques needed for creating various visual & audio effects for constructing the atmosphere (storm, thunder, snow, and rain), special effects (fire, explosion, and shooting) and creating the appropriate audio effects and background music.

DM-112 Game Animation

This module introduces you to 2D and 3D graphics & animation. You will learn various techniques of creating 2D and 3D graphics such as animated models and animated action for objects and characters. At the end of the module, you will have gained sufficient knowledge to develop high quality games through various computing PC platforms.

DM-113 Game AI

This module covers the importance of AI in the gaming world, the reason why it is the heart of attractive commercial games and why it is always present in the best game application. You will also be exposed to the different types of AI, their behaviours, the techniques to create live game worlds and the importance of power balancing between a player’s character and AI. You will also learn how to create appropriate AI based on the story line and game atmosphere.

DM-114 Game Programming

This module aims to introduce you to the basics of writing 2D and 3D games using simple languages for games creation. You will be exposed to writing 2D and 3D game programme using graphics command. Combine these together with math, looping and both basic plus conditional statements, and you will gain the necessary foundation needed to write your first 3D game using simple programming language.

DM-115 Creative Project

This module discusses the possible challenges you will experience as a project leader. Besides technical know-how, you will need management skills that will help you complete projects successfully on time, within budget and ensuring the needs of your customers are met. You will be taught methods and techniques for managing the information flow, resources, and time. You will also apply what you learn through a hands-on software game development project.
 

 

   
Assessment

Each module will be assessed either by a final Project with a combination of class participation, quizzes, assignments and/ or presentations.

 

   
Entry Requirements

3 GCE “O” Level Passes (including at least a C6 for English as first language and any other 2 subjects, including a mathematics or science subject); or
5 GCE “N” level passes with (including at least a C6 for English as first language and any other 2 subjects, including a mathematics, science or technical subject) with 3 years working experience, preferably in an IT position.
