Business and Consumer Law |
This module aims to extend the basic
principles of legal liability and applying it in the context
of businesses and consumers. It examines the statutory and
judge made laws providing consumer protection, such as legislation on false and misleading conduct to judicial decisions on unconscionability. Students will learn aspects of property law relevant to individual and small business, such as the classification of property, ownership, leases, transfer of title, leading into a discussion of insurable interests and managing business liabilities through insurance. Lastly, the module will also explore consumer credit and cheque regulations and procedures available for debt recovery. |
|
Business Forecasting |
The module primarily aims to introduce a
variety of forecasting methodologies, quantitative and
qualitative forecasting techniques that are commonly used.
Quantitative techniques taught in the module are predominantly short term in nature which seeks to identify patterns from historical data to extrapolate those patterns into the future. Causal methods of forecasting will also be discussed through an analysis of simple and multiple regression analysis. |
| Personal
Financial Planning |
This module exposes students to the
financial planning process and the legal framework and
responsibilities of planners. With the increase demand for
wealth managers and personal financial planners around the globe, this module will introduce students to financial planning concepts such as wealth creation, planning for retirement, property protection and social security issues. |
Portfolio Management |
The current trend in the funds management
industry is away from security analysis (stock picking) and
towards asset allocation (managing the balance of equities,
bonds, cash etc). The former, which may be called investment management, has been surpassed in importance by the latter, which may be called portfolio management. Portfolio management is important to both individuals who manage their own personal assets and managers who manage the assets of others. This module aims to cover the important aspects of portfolio management. Coverage includes: the construction of the portfolio and importance of investment objectives and policies; the management of the portfolio including the selection of assets, the utilisation of modern portfolio methods and the revision of the portfolio; and the protection of the portfolio through the use of derivatives. Emphasis is placed on the analytical aspects of portfolio management and the decision making process to enable students to apply the established theories and models in the financial world. |
|
Law of Business Organisations |
The objective of this module is to
introduce students to the legal principles associated with
partnerships, associations, trusts and corporations. In
particular, students will be exposed to the Partnership Act
and Corporations Act in detail and shall be required to be
able to describe all appropriate legal principles dealing
with such entities and the internal and external
relationships thereof. |
Finance
Theory and Application |
Fundamental issues in finance such as the
consumption/investment trade-off and the interaction of
decisions with capital markets (under conditions of
certainty) are introduced. The arithmetic of mean-variance
portfolio theory is then presented. This allows portfolio theory to be developed, which then leads into the presentation of the related capital asset pricing model together with two important applications. The net present value methodology is then extended into the new and more sophisticated area of real options. The valuation of real options is further developed by way of the binomial pricing process. The important ‘existence’ issue of an optimal capital structure is then examined by way of the propositions resulting from Modigliani and Miller’s analysis together with some alternative theories of capital structure. Empirical evidence on capital structure is examined and the various theories of capital structure assessed from a practical point of view. Various methods of evaluating the levered firm are then developed with emphasis given to the incidence of taxes. Finally, we will explore the interesting and important area of mergers, acquisitions and corporate governance. |
Global Economic and Trade |
National economies of today cannot
function well in isolation from occurrences in other
national economies. Global interdependence now characterises
national and international affairs. In this course, the disciplines of international economics and international trade are enriched by contributions from industrial organisation to explore issues in international trade and investment. Although a good deal of the material in the course has been drawn from Australian and United States experience, the views, theories and lessons contained therein can be readily generalised. |
Financial Markets |
This module examines the structure,
operation and performance of the financial system using
principles of financial and monetary economics. Students are
introduced to a selection of financial markets, products and
institutions the operations of which largely determine key
financial variables that affect decisions to save and invest
in the real economy. |
