USQ is a multi-award university located in Queensland, Australia. USQ is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and is on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Participants (CRICOS) which is the Australian Government’s Official Register of approved courses for international participants. USQ CRICOS Institution code is QLD 00244B. In 2005, USQ achieved accreditation with the Distance Education Training Council (DETC), an American public service organisation dedicated to identifying quality distance learning institutions. USQ was awarded the Commonwealth of Learning Award of Excellence for Institutional Achievement at the third Pan- Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning in July 2004. The Planning Environment |
This module exposes participants to the economic environment in which financial planning takes place. Financial markets and products are introduced and the legal framework in which planners operate is examined. |
| Investments and Planning |
Personal financial planning is becoming increasingly important, both to individuals and to professionals in their offering of services to the public. The development of a financial plan has become a necessity for everybody, covering details regarding wealth accumulation, retirement, insurance and estate planning issues. This module will cover in depth the financial planning process, the adoption of investment strategies, documentation, disclosure and presentation of plans. |
| Managed Investments |
This module introduces the range of investment alternatives, outlines the rationale for managed investments, provides an overview of the industry and introduces participants to the range of managed funds. In addition, the module provides participants with a framework for evaluating portfolios in terms of their diversification, management and performance. |
Insurance Markets and Products |
It is important that those who advise their clients are familiar with and understand the key components of the financial planning process. This module explores the general nature of risk and management of insurance. The economic output of insurance entities is discussed with reference to the life and general insurance products. |

Global Financial Markets |
Participants working in business need to appreciate the significance of the global financial system and understand the issues raised by the rapid changes that have occurred and are occurring in the operation and performance of international and domestic financial systems. This module examines the structure, operation and performance of the global financial system using principles of financial and monetary economics. The Australian financial system would be used as a benchmark and linkages between Australia and the global system would be demonstrated. |
Financial Risk Management |
When conducting almost all forms of competitive business activity, an understanding of financial risk measurement and management has become essential to survival. This module examines the nature and scope of financial risk management. Particular emphasis would be placed on the mechanics of options markets and the properties and strategies of option contracts/ positions. The module concludes with a general assessment of risk management strategies and performance evaluation. |
Corporate Finance |
Sound financial management is crucial to a corporation’s solvency and long-term profitability. This module introduces participants to the basic responsibilities of a corporate financial manager. Coverage includes evaluation of investment and financing alternatives, working capital management, and determination of capital structure and dividend policy. |
Investment Management Strategies |
Improved information technology, developments in quantitative techniques and financial innovation in conjunction with the deregulation of financial markets have all contributed to the need for management to apply a strategic approach to investment management. Participants are introduced to theoretical and applied techniques used in areas of security valuation, portfolio selection, asset allocation and portfolio evaluation. Examples will include portfolios comprising equity, debt, derivative and foreign assets. |
International Financial Management |
Trade is increasingly being facilitated by governments through trade agreements and the abolition of trade barriers. Profitability depends on the understanding and effective management of risks, financial instruments and taxation regimes. This module covers the concepts and mechanics of international money and capital markets. It also includes exchange rate dynamics and forecasting, discussion of exchange rate risk and exposure management, sources of International Finance and international capital budgeting techniques. |
e-Finance and Banking |
Finance related issues which are central to success of any ebusiness will be dealt in depth in this module. In particular, it provides an understanding of the electronic payment systems, electronic banking, security issues, intranets, corporate finance and conduct of e-financial markets. |
Taxation Law and Estate Planning |
An understanding of the principles of taxation is one of the most important and useful tools for anyone seeking advancement to senior management status in the corporate world. In order to participate in the planning of a client’s tax affairs, it is necessary to understand the relevant sections of the appropriate taxation laws applicable to the transaction or entity structure. Estate planning strategies will be deliberated in this module as it is of paramount importance for high net worth individuals (HNWI). |

Retirement Planning and Central Provident Fund (CPF) |
This module equips participants with the knowledge on how to devise strategies to use in both the accumulation phase and the retirement phase in order to maximise benefits. This module has been specially crafted in order to provide a comprehensive review of the CPF and in conjunction with retirement planning for high net worth individuals (HNWI). |
